Early Education

Early Childhood Programs and Services

Genesee Intermediate School District's Early Childhood Programs and Services are for children, from birth through age seven, with special educational needs. Children are referred to the program by their home school district.

Early Head Start and Head Start

Preschool programs for children ages birth to 5, provided by the Genesee County Community Action Resource Department and the Genesee Intermediate School District. Children must meet eligibility requirements for the program, based on family income.

Early On®

Early On Michigan is the system of free early intervention services for infants and toddlers, birth to three years of age, with developmental delays and/or disabilities. Early On services for Genesee County are coordinated through Genesee Intermediate School District.

Great Start

The Michigan Office of Great Start provides information about standards for quality preschools, benchmarks for kindergarten, the Great Start School Readiness Program (preschool), and other parent resources.

Genesee Intermediate School District's Great Start Readiness Program delivers free, high quality preschool programs to children throughout Genesee County. Programs utilize a research-based curriculum in a supportive learning environment to assist children with the development of the skills needed to be ready for school.

Great Start Collaborative

The Great Start Collaborative is an early childhood facilitating and convening body for Genesee County. It provides information about resources, services, and programs.

Great Start Family Coalition

The Great Start Family Coalition is a group for all parents, guardians, and caregivers. Monthly meetings include speakers on local resources and services, activities and free onsite childcare, refreshments, and opportunities to meet other families. Transportation reimbursement is available for parent meetings. Partners with the Successful Kids= Involved Parents (SKIP) to a Great Start program. The coalition also offers parent leadership opportunities.

Parents as Teachers®

Parents as Teachers provides the information, support, and encouragement parents need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life.

Successful Kids= Involved Parents (SKIP)

A parent and family support program for Genesee County families with children prenatal to kindergarten entrance. The SKIP to a Great Start program provides support for parents as their child’s first teacher and offers fun activities and connections.
